Dental Anxiety and Sedation

We understand that everyone’s dental needs are different. We are happy to offer services to minimize any stress, anxiety and pain you may feel.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide (N2O) is commonly known as laughing gas. It is inhaled through a mask that is worn during your dental procedure and provides a calming and euphoric effect to patients. It is extremely safe, with few or no side effects, and helps immensely with dental anxiety. The levels of nitrous oxide and oxygen are adjusted and controlled by the dentist to ensure your comfort throughout the appointment. You remain fully awake and aware of your surroundings, and you are able to ask and answer questions. At the end of the treatment, the nitrous oxide is turned off, and pure oxygen is provided to flush all the laughing gas out and return you to feeling like your normal self again. You will not require someone to bring you or take you home from your appointments with laughing gas. By the time you leave the office, you will be able to drive your car normally. The only preparation required is to have an empty stomach at the start of the treatment, so avoid eating and drinking for about 3 hours before your visit.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation consists of taking a pill to reduce anxiety and allow you to relax. It is a mild form of sedation which is very safe and has few to no side effects. During oral sedation, you are fully awake but significantly relaxed. You will need a ride home after your appointment, and you may feel tired for the remainder of the day.

Pain Management

Some people have very sensitive teeth and gums and resist coming to the dentist for routine cleanings due to the discomfort they are anticipating. Our office has several services to assist with minimizing discomfort during dental cleanings. Non-needle assistance includes using topical numbing gel on the gums to reduce discomfort. We also provide non-needle numbing below the gumline with a special instrument that places numbing gel carefully below the gumline to drastically reduce sensitivity during cleanings. Lastly, we can numb areas of the mouth with local anesthetic, which provides deep and lasting numbing to provide you with maximum comfort during your procedure.

Pediatric Dentistry

One of the first questions we hear from new parents is, “When should I bring my child into the office for their first check-up?” The answer is – as soon as they have teeth! When children are under about 4 years old, dental visits will consist of gaining trust and making the child feel comfortable in our environment. This lays the foundation for the child to have a lifetime of positive dental experiences. We will look for abnormalities, decay and check eruptions of the primary (baby) teeth. We use the tell, show, do method with children, where we tell them about our tools and procedures, show them what we are using, and then do it once they are comfortable. Our famous dental “chair rides” are enjoyed by the little ones and help them make them comfortable. A trip to the treasure chest at the end of their visit ensures they are excited to return for the next appointment. Being kind, gentle and fun with our little patients is our primary goal.
