How Does Dental Insurance Work?

A dental benefit plan is a contract between your employer and an insurance company. The benefits that you will receive are based on the terms of a contract that was negotiated between your employer and the insurance company and not your dental office. The goal of most dental benefit plan policies is to provide only basic care for specific dental services. The services selected are based on the cost of the policy to your employer and the negotiated arrangements with the insurance company.

Knowing that everyone is different, at 860 Dental, we will help you answer any insurance questions you have and will send a dental claim electronically on the patient’s behalf.

Why Is It Important to Keep an Appointment?

Regular dental visits are essential for the maintenance of healthy teeth and gums. And in between those examinations, it’s important that you work to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy.

What Does The Dental Hygienist Do?

Dental hygienists clean teeth, examine patients for signs of oral diseases such as gingivitis and provide other preventative dental care. They also educate patients on ways to improve and maintain good oral health.

What Does the Dentist Do?

When you see your dentist for a check-up, they will first carry out an examination or assessment. At your check-up, your dentist will assess your current oral health and any risk of future disease and advise you on the care and treatment required to secure good oral health. It is important that you try to keep your teeth healthy and clean to maintain good oral health.

What Does the Dental Assistant Do?

Dental Assistants help Dentists and Dental Hygienists with patient care, infection control, taking x-rays, treatment assistance, and scheduling. They can help to answer your dental questions while in the office. They are excellent at communicating with patients and making you feel comfortable while you are in the office.

What Does the Dental Receptionist Do?

Dental Receptionists handle all the administrative portions of your dental needs, including scheduling, insurance communication, organizing treatment plans, collecting payments and booking referrals.

At your check-up, your dentist and dental hygienist may:
  • Carry out a full examination of your mouth, teeth and gums

  • Ask about your general health and any problems you have had with your teeth, mouth or gums since your last visit

  • Ask about and give advice on your diet, smoking, and drinking

  • Explain any risks, as well as costs, of all treatment you may need

  • Discuss with you when your next visit should be

Dentist giving advice

Your dentist and dental hygienist will recommend how often you should come to see them based on your current dental health. Most adults should have a professional cleaning about three times a year. Many insurance companies pay for this service. Ask us how to find out what you are covered for. If you have problems with your teeth between check-ups, contact us, and we will guide you to what you should do.

How to Decrease Your Anxiety in the Dental Office

Do you suffer from odontophobia? It’s the condition depicting an irrational and overwhelming fear of dentistry. Research estimates that over 75 percent of adults experience some form of ‘dental fear,’ and up to 10% percent suffer from odontophobia.

To help you decrease your anxiety in the dental office here are some tips and techniques to try out:

Understand your treatment

  • Many times, a patient’s fear of the dentist stems from the fear of the unknown. Often these worries will disappear once a patient fully understands why that particular treatment is being done and how it is going to help them. At 860 Dental, our dentists will help explain the entire procedure to you before anything is done, and they will make sure to walk you through it step-by-step while the procedure is being performed.

Breathe

  • Breathe deeply and try to relax. Some dentists recommend practicing relaxation techniques before and during the appointment. Other dentists find that listening to music, or scheduling an appointment first thing in the morning before the stresses of the day add up, also helps patients to relax.

Music

  • As mentioned above, many dentists find that listening to music during an appointment calms a patient down. At 860 Dental we have iPads loaded with music apps for you to enjoy and we will even give you your own 860 Dental earphones for you to use and enjoy during your appointment that you can then take home with you.

TV

  • Similar to music, watching your favourite program while in the dental chair can ease your fears and take your mind off what is being done. Each room at 860 Dental has a television for you to watch while here.

There is always a way to get around any fear you may have about the dentist and we will make sure to help you calm your nerves and anxieties while here. At 860 Dental we hope to make your time with us as enjoyable and painless as possible!

How to Get a Painless Needle

Let’s face it, the thought of going to the dentist is enough to make anyone’s palms go cold and sweaty. Add the idea of getting a needle, and well, that will make a grown man tear. Let me tell you, it doesn’t have to be this way. Going to the dentist AND having needles can be painless!

We asked our dentists and they say the key to giving a painless needle is to inject it really slowly, for a longer period of time; almost always, this can guarantee a pain-free needle. Our dentists say that the needle itself is not the source of the pain it is the fluid that expands within the tissue. So by going slowly and injecting the contents slowly, the pain is minimalized.

At 860 Dental, our dentists can make sure they can provide a “wow” experience, not an “ow” experience.
